Sky Ferreira Lashes Out At Internet Trolls On Facebook

Sky Ferreira has spoken out against internet trolling and online misogyny, addressing her “exhaustion” at receiving “abusive” messages in relation to her past experience with sexual abuse and urging her followers to report or delete any abusive comments they see.

Taking to Facebook, the singer vented her frustrations with the constant messages of criticism and abuse she reportedly receives through social media. “I’m not a mess, I’m not a drug addict, I’m not a slut or a bitch,” she wrote.

“I’m exhausted of (more than some) people telling me how I should look or be if I want to be a “pop star” & how they think it’s okay to say vile & (sexually) abusive shit to me on a daily basis over the internet,” wrote Ferreira. “I’m not only writing about myself…because almost every person has to deal with this.”

Ferreira claimed one such attacker had been harassing her about her past experiences with sexual abuse, which the singer opened up about to the Guardian earlier this year. She said she had mustered the courage to tell the police about the abuse, but they were dismissive. “They blamed it on me for being quiet. They said being quiet made me the target for it.”

In her Facebook post, she explained how she and an friend later confronted the alleged troll in person at a show. “They came to one of my shows & my friend confronted the person. We were accused of being homophobic after. Which is absolutely insane because my friends, my family & a majority of my fans are homosexual,” she wrote. “Sexuality, gender, race,& age are irrelevant to me.”

Continued Ferreira, “treating people like shit because you feel like shit doesn’t help anyone. If you see hateful/disgusting/abusive comments, please start reporting it or deleting it. I think that’s the only way we can start to lower that sort of thing from happening.”

Ferreira is one of the acts rumoured to be a part of this year’s Splendour In The Grass lineup, having revealed recently that she will make her Australian live debut this July, coming, she says, “for a festival.”
