Tyler, The Creator Arrested For Inciting Riot At SXSW

Tyler, The Creator, real name Tyler Gregory Okonma, the leader of notorious Los Angeles hip-hop crew Odd Future was arrested at Austin-Bergstrom Airport on Saturday for allegedly inciting a riot during his headlining spot at SXSW‘s Converse/Thrasher Death Match event at the Scoot Inn.

The Associated Press reports that during Thursday’s performance, the 23-year-old rapper encouraged fans to push their way past employees attempting to control the entrance to the at-capacity venue. “All y’all outside the gates, y’all push through,” he said, as reported by KXAN.

Officers at the scene said in a warrant that the controversial rapper called for fans to push their way inside twice and that a bartender had to protect a woman from injury in the resulting push. One Scoot Inn employee told KXAN that he was punched in the face by a member of the crowd.

According to the AP, Tyler’s bond was set at $3,500. If the rapper is convicted of inciting a riot, a Class A misdemeanour, he faces up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Tyler was performing at The Mohawk on Red River St on Thursday when a DUI driver caused a car crash which killed two.

In February, Tyler and Odd Future were barred from entering New Zealand to perform as part of Eminem’s Rapture festival after immigration authorities deemed them a “threat to public order and the public interest,” citing past performances in which the group allegedly “incited violence.”
