SXSW Crash Survivor Gets Private In-Hospital Concert

18-year-old Mason Endres was one of 23 SXSW attendees injured when a driver plowed through a crowd barricade outside of The Mohawk on Red River St in Austin, Texas, killing two. Over the weekend, Endres received a private performance from Jared & The Mill from her hospital bed.

“We played the songs she wanted to hear,” Jared & The Mill singer Jared Kolesar told Mashable. “It was a very heavy feeling in the room because of everything she has been through — heavy and inspiring. Her parents were really emotional. She’s just as much our friend as she is our fan.”

The Phoenix, Arizona-based outfit is one of Endres’ favourite bands and decided to visit her at St David’s Medical Center in Austin to give her a private concert, as she couldn’t physically attend the band’s SXSW show on Friday due to a number of major injuries sustained in the crash.

According to a doctor interviewed by the Austin American-Statesman, Endres’ injuries include a broken nose, a broken femur, and a severed artery in the opposite leg. She also received a concussion during the crash, and as a result, does not remember the tragic events of the night.

“We were waiting for Mason’s dad to pick us up and all of a sudden this car comes…around the corner at sixty miles an hour and we couldn’t move before it just plowed us down… as I was getting hit I watched my best friend just get hit like a bowling pin,” says Mason’s friend of the night.
