Bedroom Looper Kawehi Opens Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’

Honolulu-born, Lawrence, Kansas-based bedroom superstar Kawehi has once again set herself apart from the rest of the digital-looping pack on YouTube with a recent cover of Nirvana‘s 1993 hit Heart Shaped Box from the legendary grunge outfit’s third and final studio album, In Utero.

Kawehi made her bones by performing looped and layered covers of pop standards, from Michael Jackson‘s The Way You Make Me Feel, to Nine Inch Nails‘ 1994 crossover hit Closer. Her Heart Shaped Box rendition comes from a new series of covers selected by Kickstarter pledgers.

“The Cover Series continues with a new series: Robot Heart! I’ll be covering songs that Kickstarter backers pledged for – starting with one of my favorite bands – Nirvana. I love everything about this song,” the singer writes in the video description, which directs users to her latest Kickstarter page.

Kawehi has currently raised over $28,000 for her Robot Heart series, more than $25,000 over her original goal of $3,000. She writes that the purpose behind the series is to create songs “from the perspective of a robot.” Readers can check out her unique Heart Shaped Box cover below.
