The Flaming Lips Unveil ‘Flaming Side Of The Moon’

The Flaming Lips have bestowed what for upon the cynics who thought Saturday’s sudden announcement of an imminent companion piece to Pink Floyd‘s classic 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon was some kind of April Fool’s Day joke, offering a stream of the project via SoundCloud.

It’s no surprise some thought the whole thing could be some kind of elaborate prank. Many thought the announcement of the band’s thirteenth studio album The Terror was also an April Fool’s joke, though that was understandable considering the album had a planned release date of 1st April.

According to Flaming Side Of The Moon‘s press release, as reported by Consequence of Sound, fans are encouraged to listen to the two works — Flaming and DSOTM — simultaneously, urging them to seek out “the original Alan Parsons’ engineered quadraphonic LP mix of Dark Side.”

The band also insist that their project was “carefully crafted to sync up perfectly with the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz,” just as Dark Side of the Moon kinda sorta but not really does. All in all, it looks to be a sure-fire way to hear Australia’s favourite album like you’ve never heard it before.

The Lips released a track-to-track Dark Side of the Moon covers album back in 2009, and in between hanging with Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker, they’re reportedly working on another tribute album, this time to The Beatles‘ seminal 1967 LP, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
