Courtney Love Considering Kurt Cobain Musical

The concept has been floated previously, but it appears now that Courtney Love is seriously considering the possibility of staging a musical as a tribute to her late husband, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. She told NME a stage production about Cobain is “very likely” to happen.

Speaking with the publications as a part of its upcoming tribute to Cobain on the 20th anniversary of the his death, the Nirvana frontman’s widow said that she hopes to make a biopic, documentary and musical about him. She said the musical idea has been propelled to the forefront by enthusiastic fans.

“After being swarmed by tons of Nirvana fanmail and social media posts pushing for a musical to become a reality, both Frances [Kurt and Courtney’s daughter] and I have thought long and hard and agreed that if we can reach up to the highest shelf and select a team of the greatest and most respected writers, producers and directors, then a Broadway musical is very likely to happen,” said Love.

She said the musical would be approached in a unique and respectful way. “There would have to be a story, and a great story, one that hasn’t been told before,” she is quoted as saying. “I would devote countless hours with an A-team to create a project that reflects Kurt in the most respectful but honest way possible, so that his story, his music and his legacy can be resurrected on stage for not only the world to see, but more importantly for our daughter to see.”

Loudwire reports, in 2012, Love’s manager Sam Lufti admitted, while testifying against his former client Britney Spears, that he and Love were looking into the possibility of staging either a film or stage production dedicated to telling Cobain’s story. Love denied those claims at the time.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death, and his memory is being honoured in several ways. Next week, Nirvana will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cobain is set to be immortalised in his very own comic book and a crowdfunding campaign has been launched to raise funds for the establishment of a Kurt Cobain museum.

Love said she is considering going ahead with the Kurt Cobain musical for the sake of their daughter. “I know her father’s spirit will be on that stage and sitting in that theatre with her will be the most emotional experience of our lives.”
