Bruce Springsteen Covers Van Halen’s ‘Jump’

During his recent and highly lucrative tour of Australia, Bruce Springsteen and his formidable E Street Band covered a raft of Australian classics both old and new. Now he’s taken puns to the next level by performing Van Halen‘s Jump during the March Madness Music Festival in Dallas.

The festival is part of the celebrations for the current NCAA college basketball tournament, colloquially known in the States as “March Madness.” Naturally, The Boss opened up his 25-song set by bringing out a basketball and having a referee aid him and one of his guitarists in a tip-off.

Among the covers performed during his Australia-New Zealand tour as homages to local artists were AC/DC’s Highway to Hell in Perth and Melbourne, INXS and The Easybeats in Sydney, the Bee Gees’ classic disco strut Stayin’ Alive in Brisbane, and Lorde‘s Royals in Auckland.

During their 40-year career, Springsteen and his famous band have covered everyone from Woody Guthrie and Chuck Berry to Patti Smith and The Clash. The Boss has shown a particular predilection for Australian artists, having covered The Saints on his most recent album, High Hopes.
