Childish Gambino Rails Against His Record Label

Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, wants someone to rescue him from his current record label. The rapper took to Twitter on Monday to slam Glassnote Records following the release of both the video for the song Sweatpants and a blog post about Childish Gambino’s Deep Web Tour.

“So this Sweatpants video and blog was important to us,” he wrote on Twitter on Monday, “and it wasn’t handled correctly.” The rapper did not go into detail about how the video and blog were mishandled but his tweets suggested it may have something to do with how they were disseminated to the public.

“I said ‘I know how the internet works tho [sic]’. My record company laughed on the phone and said ‘oh really?’,” wrote the rapper in just one of his series of nine tweets on the subject. “We were told a lot of things were gonna happen and they were all lies. So I’m done. Someone buy me out of this contract.”

This isn’t the first time Childish Gambino has had issues with Glassnote over distribution of his latest album, Because The Internet. When the same track, Sweatpants, was leaked last year, Gambino was similarly unhappy, citing “other people’s lust for money and impatience” as a catalyst for the leak.

The album, which was released in December, was his second released on his current label. MTV reports, between Because the Internet and his 2011 commercial debut, Camp, Gambino has sold nearly 500,000 albums with Glassnote. But, the rapper seems to be indicating that their relationship is coming to a swift end.

“I don’t like record companies. But I’m not having another project go through this,” he posted. “A lot of people came around after our first week sales. All those people are welcome now. Def Jam, Atlantic, whatever.”

“My team is honest. Ur [sic] not on my team if ur not honest. Don’t lie to me,” he concluded. Gambino is currently finishing up US dates on his Deep Web Tour. See all the tweets and the video for Sweatpants below.
