Space rockers Muse have said that following their Coachella appearances they will be heading back into the studio to begin work on a new album. The new record will be a follow-up to their sixth studio album, 2012’s The 2nd Law.
“We’re going to go back in May and start working on some new stuff, so I think we’ll start recording it this year,” drummer Dominic Howard told KROQ over the weekend. “If we can get something out this year, that would be great, but definitely next year.”
Earlier this year, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy said that Muse’s seventh album would be a ‘stripped back’ affair. “I’ve got a pretty good picture of what I’d like the next album to be like,” Bellamy said. “I kind of feel like it will be nice to reconnect and remind ourselves of just the basics of who we are.”
“I have this strong feeling that the next album should be something that really does strip away the additional things that we’ve experimented with on the last two albums, which is electronics, symphonics and orchestral work and all that kind of stuff,” he added.
During their Coachella interview (below) the band also spoke about the influence of Nirvana on their music, after covering the band’s song Lithium both at a gig in Sao Paolo, Brazil and during their headline set at the Californian desert festival.
“They’re one of the reasons we picked up some instruments and decided to start a band in the first place, and I think that for many other millions of people, they were influential for starting bands,” explained Howard. “We all love them, it was a band that all three of us loved and it was that kind of music and some other bands that brought us together and we became friends because of that.”
Muse will play the second Coachella weekend this Saturday, April 19th. In December, Bellamy said Muse had already begun writing new material for the next record and that fans could expect at least a new single by Christmas 2014.
