A recent performance by UK pop mainstay Lily Allen at London nightclub G-A-Y, which culminated in the Air Balloon singer donning a blonde wig, bikini, and a flowing black dress and miming along to Beyoncé‘s Drunk in Love, has left some wondering if the lip-sync was an homage or a parody.
As the Herald Sun reports, after debuting several new songs from her upcoming third album Sheezus, Allen indulged the packed crowd with a makeshift reenactment of Beyoncé’s video for her 2013 collaboration with husband Jay-Z – writhing and even having a bucket of water thrown on her.
A media-savvy Allen has already nipped this one in the bud, tweeting, “I wasn’t mocking Beyoncé, like I wasn’t dissing anyone on #SHEEZUS, this is so f-cking boring.” Allen explained that every time she performs at the venue she does a cover in drag, previously dressing up as Britney Spears.
“Why do people jump to conclusions,” she mused. “Only one person can tell you what my intentions are, and that would be me.” Allen had a similar misunderstanding earlier this month, after she was forced to explain that the title of her new album was not a mockery of Kanye West, but a tribute.
