In the wake of former Flaming Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock‘s explosive allegations of racism and abuse, which he levelled at his former bandmates in an open letter sent to Pitchfork, members of the band have now responded, rubbishing Scurlock’s claims and the alleged reason for his departure.
In the account published by Pitchfork, Scurlock described a dispute that arose between himself and Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, after a friend of the frontman posted an image of herself wearing a Native American headdress to social media, which Scurlock attacked as being racist and insensitive.
Coyne came to the defence of Christina Fallin, his friend and the singer of the band Pink Pony, causing a rift between himself and Scurlock. The drummer alleges that the dispute resulted in “endless verbal (with threats of physical) abuse” from the frontman, which caused his egress.
Following the publishing of Scurlock’s account of the split, Coyne tweeted what appeared to be his response, writing, “Fools take a knife and stab people in the back. The wise take a knife, cut the cord, and set themselves free from the fools,” and posted a photo of Buddha’s Brew Kombucha displaying the quote, “Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by Love, this is the eternal rule.”
Meanwhile, Lips multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd was less cryptic in his response, taking to Twitter to proclaim that “This Lips/Kliph bullshit has gone too far” and that the drummer and the band parted ways “because of the usual band musical differences. The rest has been blown way out.”
