Fresh off the recently concluded Groovin The Moo 2014 tour, Karnivool came in to Triple J to discuss how the band are heading “back to the drawing board” to craft material for a follow-up to 2013’s Asymmetry, simultaneously describing their somewhat convoluted songwriting process.
“I think we’re going to head back to the drawing board on our next writing cycle,” singer Ian Kenny told Matt and Alex. “Asymmetry was out on a limb and that was the whole idea, it’s a pretty strange record. So now I think the band’s kind of got a bit more of a wider canvas to what we want to do. We’re writing in parts at the moment but no idea of a release. We’re not going to flirt with that.”
According to Kenny, the Perth outfit’s songwriting process is often a time-consuming affair. He explained that the band spent four years writing Asymmetry, their third full-length release, and with Kenny now spending most of his time in the US, things are likely to get even more complicated.
“We kind of write in parts and in pieces and we kind of have a process where we write something and let it sort of digest and kind of understand what it is, so it takes time with our songwriting process,” explained Kenny. According to guitarist Drew Goddard, the single We Are came at the end of an eight-month songwriting process, “which is a pretty short period for a Karnivool song.”
Kenny’s time in the US with Birds of Tokyo has apparently been paying off, with the band’s hit Lanterns recently featured in the trailer for the upcoming Steven Spielberg production The Hundred-Foot Journey. Check out Karnivool’s Like A Version cover of London Grammar below.
