Australian singer-songwriter and ARIA award-winner Sarah Blasko performed at Sydney’s March In May rally on Sunday, a response to the Abbott government’s recently announced federal budget. Blasko has now taken to social media to criticise the sensationalist media coverage of the event.

“March Australia’s March In May yesterday was fantastic,” opens Blasko. “I played two songs & marched with around 8,000+ people in Sydney. It was mostly a peaceful protest despite some highly questionable journalism that’s out there today. There was a really diverse range of people united in our disrespect for a whole range of decisions the current Australian government has made.”

Blasko insisted that there’s “actually nothing crazy or even particularly ‘radical'” about disagreeing with the stance of your government or their policies. “I think it’s really important that’s clear after the way I have seen the march portrayed. As in everyday life, I didn’t agree with everyone around me.”

“I’m just glad people were making the effort to do something about the core problems as I feel the stakes are incredibly high,” she concludes. Among the media’s coverage was a cover story by The Daily Telegraph titled, “The Ferals Are Revolting,” which described protestors as “delinquents.”
