Die Antwoord’s ‘Pitbull Terrier’ Video Is Way Better Than The Song

We at Music Feeds love dogs, so it’s certainly not the title or the concept behind irreverent South African party crew Die Antwoord‘s new song that we’re not responding to, and it’s certainly not the video, because it just might be their most visually spectacular, and frankly trippiest, venture yet.

Directed by Ninja — one of the group’s two vocalists with Yolandi Visser — the video, like all of Die Antwoord’s previous videos, exists squarely in Die Antwoord Land, a grimy, kitschy, oft-horrific dreamscape where, in this case, dog-human hybrids exist and must be kept on a leash at all times.

We love it. The song unfortunately resembles more a parody of the South African rap-rave outfit than the genuine article. All the usual elements are there — cheesy production, coarse, hyperbolic lyrics, Ninja-Yolandi interplay — but the catchiness and tongue-in-cheek humour seems to be all but gone.

Pitbull Terrier comes from Die Antwoord’s forthcoming LP Donker Mag, expected for release internationall on 3rd June.
