Are The Stone Roses Breaking Up Again?

A representative for iconic Manchester band The Stone Roses has refused to comment on rumours that the band are days away from officially announcing their split. When contacted by NME, a band spokesperson reportedly declined to add anything to the rumour, simply replying, “No comment.”

The rumour was sparked by user HerringBone on the Stone Roses discussion forum I Am Without Shoes Too, quickly making its way to fan sites and even Louder Than War, a music site operated by John Robb, friend of the band and author of The Stone Roses and the Resurrection of British Pop.

“Just had word from a friend who works at Universal Records and announcement will be made next week regarding the bands future,” HerringBone’s post opened. “Says the band’s representatives and Universal’s are working on ending the contract and the guys going their separate ways.”

“According to a band source after all the gigs were finished trying to recreate magic between four very different entities as compared to their earlier incarnation just didn’t work. The usual obligatory band statement will conclude with them all remaining good friends and ending for good The Stone Roses.” It’s important to note that there has yet to be any comment from an official band source.

Fuelling the rumour mill is the fact that the Madchester heroes have been virtually inactive since their performances at the Coachella festival and the Isle of Wight last year. The band’s social media channels have been silent since April and their website has not been updated since late last year.

The band reformed in 2011 after breaking up in 1996. They embarked on a tour in 2012 and 2013, including several Australian performances which were well-received. The group was even rumoured to be working on a new album, but this was never confirmed by official band sources.
