Australian Acts Awarded New ARIA Chart Number 1s Trophy

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) have today unveiled a new award and accompanying trophy to recognise 22 homegrown acts and releases which have reached the coveted number one position on the ARIA album or singles chart.

Shaped like our very own island nation, the ARIA #1 Chart Award will be presented to artists as soon as they hit the peak position, in recognition of their achievements. ARIA have also retrospectively awarded artists who have reached the top of the chart from the beginning of 2013 until today.

Local acts who have so far been awarded the patriotic statue include Chet Faker, 5 Seconds of Summer, Flume, Karnivool, Kylie Minogue, Rufus, Boy & Bear, \Bliss N Eso as well as Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds who debuted at number one for the first time in their career with last year’s Push The Sky Away record.

There have been 17 local albums to reach number one since January 2013, with INXS celebrating a massive seven week streak at the top with their The Very Best compilation, off the back of the Never Tear Us Apart television series.

“A key feature of ARIA’s activities has always been to champion the development and success of recording artists,” explained Denis Handlin AM, ARIA Chairman. “The ARIA #1 Chart Awards not only reflect the sales and chart successes achieved but also the great passion of fans right across the country for music.”

ARIA CEO Dan Rosen said, “We look forward to handing out many more awards to artists in the future.” He hopes to continue the number one chart celebrations this week as a part of the VIVID‘s In Conversation series, when he hosts a discussion on what it takes to reach “number one”. The event will take place in Sydney on the 29th May at 9pm at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
