GWAR’s David Brockie Cause Of Death Revealed

David Brockie, known to fans as Oderus Urungus the frontman for the Grammy-nominated satirical thrash metal outfit GWAR, died of an accidental heroin overdose in his home in March, the Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office said on Tuesday.

GWAR Manager Jack Flanagan confirmed unverified reports of the frontman’s death in March, writing, “It is with a saddened heart, that I confirm my dear friend Dave Brockie, artist, musician, and lead singer of GWAR passed away at approximately 6:50 pm EST Sunday, March 23, 2014.”

The 50-year-old Brockie was found by his roommate on 23rd March dead in his Richmond home. Brockie died from “acute heroin toxicity” with the death deemed an accident by Virginia’s medical examiner’s office.

According to CBS affiliate WTVR, responding police investigators to Brockie’s home on March 23rd found evidence of heroin use, but the cause of death wasn’t finalised until toxicology tests were completed.

Earlier this year GWAR toured Australia, marking their 30th anniversary by stirring controversy while decapitating an effigy of Tony Abbott in their infamous stage show, whose trademarks include horror-style stage spectacles.

Despite Brockie’s death, the remaining GWAR members are continuing on as a band. Their annual GWAR-B-Q will go on as planned on August 16th in Richmond, Viginia where they plan on holding a public memorial for Brockie. They’ve also been announced to perform at Chicago’s Riot Fest.

Gwar have also announced plans to open their very own restaurant, fulfilling “one of the last dreams of their fallen singer, Oderus Urungus.” Dubbed GWARbar, the eatery promises to be “the singularly most important culinary event to occur since the invention of the spoon.”
