Iconic Aussie rockers Midnight Oil say they are considering the possibility of a reunion tour, with the band’s drummer remarking on his excitement over the prospect. There’s just one catch Peter Garrett‘s still a little busy.

Speaking to theMusic.com.au, Oils drummer Rob Hirst, has said the upcoming Midnight Oil art exhibition, set to open 20th June at Manly’s Art Gallery & Museum, might lead to the band’s comeback.

“Yeah, yeah, we might, yeah,” Hirst said of the possibility of a comeback tour. “Pete’s writing his memoirs, and that will take a while, so we’ll see how he feels after that. [The idea] makes me excited and terrified at the same time!”

Formed in 1972, the legendary Australian rockers disbanded in 2002 so that Garrett could pursue a political career. They reformed only a handful of times over the last decade for charity concerts, including WaveAid in 2005 and Sound Relief in 2009.

Hirst currently plays in surf rock band The Break, with other Midnight Oil alums Martin Rotsey and Jim Moginie and has also enlisted the services of Brian Ritchie (Violent Femmes) and Jack Howard (Hunters & Collectors).

Speculation about a Midnight Oil comeback started when frontman Peter Garrett resigned from politics in July 2013 amidst the Labor Party’s leadership spill. Not long after, the band’s long-term manager Gary Morris announced his departure, squashing circling reformation rumours at the time.

Hirst was speaking to the music publication about an upcoming art exhibition, which will chronicle the history of Midnight Oil. It will include never seen before documentaries and videos, as well as a never-released song called The Ghost of the Roadhouse.

“It’s a quaint little song in a way, very Australian and I think it has historical value,” Oils guitarist, Jim Moginie, who composed it in 1982 with Peter Garrett, told the ABC. The song was originally a demo for the album 10-1 but was dropped.
