Glastonbury Fans Campaigning To Axe Metallica

It seems Glastonbury fans will take any excuse to remove thrash metal legends Metallica from the festival’s 2014 lineup. Conscientious fans Chris Jenaya and Aaron Dale have banded together to launch a petition to ban Metallica from Glastonbury for their alleged support of bear hunting.

The source of the controversy is Metallica frontman James Hetfield‘s new gig. Though he’s still hard at work on the next Metallica album, Hetfield has lent his narrating chops to the History Channel’s upcoming series The Hunt, which chronicles a journey to Kodiak, Alaska to hunt bears.

This has prompted Jenaya and Dale to launch a full-scaled online assault, including a petition, a Facebook page, and a website appealing to the organisers of Glastonbury to remove Metallica from their lineup as their support of big game hunting is “incompatible with the spirit of Glastonbury.”

The petition is steadily nearing it’s 6,000 signature goal, while the Facebook page has garnered just under 20,000 likes, though it’s difficult to tell if the latter is motivated by Hetfield’s love of hunting or likees agree with the sentiments of Scottish post-rockers Mogwai, who labelled Metallica “shite.”

Meanwhile, drummer Lars Ulrich has urged fans to “trust your friendly neighbourhood Metallica.” The drummer, who’d long been vocal about the band’s desire to play the festival, assured fans that the thrash icons will “put something suitable together” for the legendary UK music event.
