While Tyler, The Creator has made no secret of the fact that he wishes to move away from rapping and venture into other interests, predominantly filmmaking, he’s now revealed the extent of his aspirations to Larry King. The OF leader says he wants his name to rank alongside Tarantino.
The veteran interviewer opened the interview by asking the divisive artist if he gets annoyed when exclusively referred to as a rapper. “Yes,” Tyler replied. “I’m much more than that. I just like making stuff and rhyming words together in a rhythm is one of those things.” While he conceded that rapping was responsible for making him famous, he also believes “my personality overall did.”
Though he doesn’t “knock” rapping, Tyler said he wants to shuck the confines of the role. “It puts you in this box,” he said. “I’m talented enough to do other things. I don’t know, I’m pretty bored with it. It’s not interesting. In the future, I want to do films. I want people to mention my name next to Wes Anderson or Quentin Tarantino. I don’t want my name to be mentioned next to other rappers at all.”
“I hate rapping,” Tyler proclaimed. In addition to his cinematic aspirations, the controversial Los Angeles polymath says that he’s been working on his singing chops and would like sing more on records. Due to his deep voice, he says he’s been listening to Isaac Hayes and Barry White.
Tyler and King also discussed his frequent use of the n-word, which has drawn ire from many. “It’s pretty natural [for me to say that]. I don’t really think twice on it. I don’t know, it’s just words,” said Tyler. However, he admitted that the word is still offensive “to some people, to many people.”
“You have to understand, I grew up in a different time,” he continued. “That word is just a word, it has no effect. But it is a double standard because there’s people who would get offended if someone who doesn’t have the skin tone of me said it.” He opined that those who get offended are “keeping the original meaning of that alive,” concluding, “I think you give certain words power.”
