Melbourne’s Gasometer Hotel will host the first all-ages gig to be held in a Victorian pub in over 20 years this July. A lineup featuring Melbourne’s own Client Liaison and Animaux will perform on Sunday, 6th July from 2:30pm to 6pm, to celebrate the changes to the state’s strict liquor laws.
From 1st July, amendments to the regulations of Victoria’s Liquor Control Reform Act means the state’s famed live music venues will now be able to host all-ages events by simply notifying the Victorian Commission of Gaming and Liquor Regulation a week before the show. There will be no fees and no application process, expediting the efforts of venues to host shows for young people.
Previously, some under-18s-only shows could only be held in licensed venues under strict circumstances, and only after publicans had paid a fee and gone through a long application period. The reforms open up opportunities for young Victorian musicians and audience members alike.
“So many people now playing or working in the music industry first got the bug seeing an all-ages show in the ’80s and ’90s, so Music Victoria is thrilled that today’s generation of youngsters will be afforded the same opportunities,” said Patrick Donovan of live music lobby group Music Victoria.
“It makes sense that young people can experience the joys – and responsibilities – of a live music experience… in a safe, supervised environment,” he added. Music Victoria, along with The Push, have led the charge in reforming the state’s notoriously prohibitive liquor licensing regulations.
