Metallica opened their headlining set at Glastonbury 2014 by poking fun at the controversy that has surrounded their place on the lineup. Before taking the stage, the thrash veterans screened an eight-minute satirical short film directed by The Filth And The Fury filmmaker Julien Temple.
In addition to some fans feeling that a metal group would seem out-of-place on the traditionally indie Glastonbury lineup (there were similar protests the year Jay-Z performed) much of the criticism levelled at the group had to do with frontman James Hetfield‘s involvement with bear hunting.
The short screened before the band’s performance took the protests head-on, splicing together scenes from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and an English fox hunt, culminating in four bears shooting at the hunters with rifles. The bears are then revealed to be the four band members in bear costumes. The clip features a soundtrack of What Does the Fox Say and Sweet’s Fox on the Run.
