Coldplay And Cat Power Team Up On ‘I Wish I Was Here’

English pop-rockers Coldplay have teamed up with singer-songwriter Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, for a collaborative track titled I Wish I Was Here, which is set to appear on the soundtrack to Wish I Was Here, the upcoming crowdfunded film by actor/director Zach Braff.

A musical collaboration between the uber-popular Chris Martin-fronted group and the more insular and alternative Marshall seems strange at first, yet the musicians have managed to meld some of the most delicate elements of their respective sounds into I Wish I Was Here (below). Cat Power’s warm vocals sit amongst some very Coldplay-esque piano melodies, before being joined by the voice of Martin.

According to NPR, Braff gave an early version of the film to Martin, who then got Coldplay together to work on the song.

“Chris had the idea that it would be sung by a woman. I thought that was a genius idea, because one of the things the film is about is a strong woman becoming the matriarch of her family,” Braff told NPR.

“When Chris and I were talking, we both kind of simultaneously said, ‘Cat Power.’ I reached out to Chan Marshall and she and I met and really clicked. I set her up to watch the film in her apartment,” Braff added. “The whole time she was watching she kept texting me all the different parts she was loving. She said yes the instant it was over.”

Wish I Was Here will be released on 18th July in the US, with the soundtrack being released on the same day in Australia.
