Dave Grohl once again hit out at reality singing shows during a recent talk at the Television Critics Association press tour. The Foo Fighters frontman is a known critic of reality talent shows like The Voice, having criticised them in the past for warping the perception of how success is achieved.
“I don’t want my kid to think that the only way you can be a musician is to stand in line at a song contest audition, and then wind up having a bazillionaire tell you you’re not a good singer,” said Grohl, according to ET Canada. “Don’t get me started. To me, that’s not what music’s about.”
It’s hardly the first time the frontman has hit out at TV talent shows. A quote Grohl gave to Sky magazine back in March 2013, in which he blamed shows like The Voice for “destroying the next generation of musicians” and detrimentally affecting kids, is now frequently circulated on the web.
Speaking to NME last year, Grohl further lambasted “shows where people are judged so harshly by fucking musicians that hardly even play an instrument on their own fucking albums,” and mentioned The Voice specifically during his keynote address at South By Southwest later that year.
Several Aussie rockers have also been critical of reality shows, including Daddy Cool frontman Ross Wilson, Screaming Jets frontman Dave Gleeson, and most recently, Dan Sultan, who said, “these shows are set up solely for humiliation and making money from [viewer vote] phone calls.”
In addition to his comments about TV talent shows, Grohl’s talk at the TCA press tour was also lauded for his everyman approach to the event, which included forgetting to turn off his phone before his address. Grohl was at the event to promote his new HBO documentary series, Sonic Highways, proclaiming that the new Foo Fighters album was “all about reinventing the process.”
