Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus albums were ceremonially destroyed following a minor league baseball game over the weekend. Organised by the Charleston RiverDogs, it was dubbed “Disco Demolition 2: You Better Belieb It,” after a similar stunt during a major league game in 1979.

As Billboard reports, a continuation of a Chicago White Sox promotion organised by radio DJ Steve Dahl, in which thousands of disco records were demolished at Comiskey Park in an on-field explosion during a doubleheader between the White Sox and Detroit Tigers, Disco Demolition 2 occurred after a face-off between the Charleston RiverDogs and the Augusta GreenJackets.

“Like so many, we have taken special exception to Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus’s music along with his numerous run-ins with the law and her controversial performances,” RiverDogs general manager Dave Echols said in statement. He went on to say that the stunt is part of the team’s dedication to the “eradication of their dread musical disease,” but that it was being performed “all in good fun.”

Fans who brought Bieber and Cyrus material to the game received a discounted ticket, however, by the looks of things in the video below, that didn’t provide much of an incentive. In fact, compared to the 1979 incident, which resulted in an on-field riot, the whole thing was kind of an anticlimax.

Disco legend Nile Rodgers recently remarked on the original Disco Demolition in a Facebook post after performing Let’s Dance with Prince at the Essence Music Festival. Rodgers said producing David Bowie‘s hit album of the same name helped him recover from the backlash against disco.
