Radiohead Members Reveal New Solo Material

Radiohead guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood and drummer Philip Selway have both revealed new solo material, with Greenwood debuting an intricate guitar-driven piece and Selway adding an electronic edge to his solo work as he readies his second solo album.

Selway has unveiled the very artful music video for Coming Up For Air, a cut from his forthcoming album Weatherhouse, which is due out on 3rd October. The track marks a shift in Selway’s solo work, with electronic percussion, reverberating vocals and spacey synthesizers taking the place of the acoustic guitars which featured so heavily on his 2010 solo album Familial.

The Coming Up For Air video (below) was directed by Spanish film collective NYSU and is awash with surreal imagery. The watery guitars which do finally make an appearance lend the song to some of the material on Radiohead’s last two albums, In Rainbows and The King Of Limbs.

Meanwhile, Greenwood recently debuted a new composition by the name of Skip Loop, a unique, complicated and even slightly dissonant piece which also features a small string section. The track (below) has more similarities to Greenwood’s film score work than to his work with Radiohead.

As Pitchfork reports, it was only recently announced that another new piece by Greenwood, titled Water, will be debuted later this by the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), who Greenwood has worked closely with in the past. The ACO will tour across Europe and Australia, with the world premiere taking place in Dublin, Ireland on 2nd October. The composition will be played alongside material from Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Haydn, and will finally reach Australia on 26th October when it’s set to be performed in Melbourne.

Radiohead and said to be beginning recording for their next album in September. Meanwhile, Jonny Greenwood and frontman Thom Yorke have already been brainstorming new material.
