Almost seven years since it last aired, triple j‘s much loved interactive music documentary show The J Files has found a new home on the station’s digital offshoot Double J and the new series will debut at 8pm Thursday, 21st August.
Richard Kingsmill, host of The J Files from 1996 to 2003, will launch the latest iteration of the series with an in depth look into the 20 year career of Something For Kate, who will have just wrapped up their 20 Year Anniversary national tour. The program will be simulcast on both Double J and triple j from 8pm.
Following that first program, various hosts will present the two hour show on Double J each Thursday evening with the first four episodes looking at the careers and movements surrounding Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan and Riot Grrrl.
Before the shows air, listeners can join in on the interactive conversation and share their personal connections with the artists and their music via the Double J website.
The J Files began on triple j in 1996 and ran through until 2003, in which time Kingsmill presented over 400 radio shows, a number of TV segments and even produced a book exploring the artists, songs and ideas that shaped music history.
Since 2003 triple j have aired a variety of diverse music specials which often included material from the original series. Archived episodes dedicated to the likes of Elliott Smith, Sonic Youth, Dave Grohl and Bjork are still available on the triple j website.
