Tumbleweed To Honour Jay Curley At Sydney Festival

Tumbleweed have announced they will dedicate their November performance at Young Henrys’ Sydney street festival, Small World, to their late bassist Jay Curley, whose sudden death they announced last week.

“We will be playing Young Henry’s Small World Festival in honour of Jay,” the band said in a statement on their Facebook page. “Filling in on bass will be Jay & Lennys older brother Pat Curley. Hope to see you there to celebrate the life and times of Jay Curley.”

In a statement, the band added that, “As for any other shows, we have not come to a decision on that as yet but will be having talks with our agent to confirm or cancel some other Melbourne shows we had pencilled in.”

The Australian music industry was shocked and saddened last week when Tumbleweed announced via Facebook the news of Jay Curley’s death. Jay Curley was one of the founding members of the stoner rock group along with his two brothers Dave and Lenny. The band’s original drummer Richie Lewis soon became the band’s leading vocalist and Steve O’Brien was invited to be the band’s new drummer.

Tumbleweed become one of the country’s most successful outfits during that time, making regular festival appearances and famously supporting Nirvana on their one and only Australian tour. Jay Curley had left before their 2000 album, Mumbo Jumbo, but returned in 2009 for a festival appearance and worked with the reunited band on their 2013 record, Sounds From The Other Side.

Steve O’Brien told Fairfax the band will soon be releasing a new video clip, for the song Drop in the Ocean, which features on the comeback album. “It was intended for release anyway and was in production at the time of Jason’s death, just that now the song has more meaning and will be a further tribute to him.”

The Young Henrys Small World festival is set to take over Marrickville’s Jabez Street on Saturday September 20th. Other acts on the lineup include Melbourne five-piece The Delta Riggs, Sydney punk brats Bloods and Sydney blues and rock band The Snowdroppers. See the full lineup and event details below.
