Music Feeds Podcast Episode #106: The Preatures

Buzzing Sydney band The Preatures are finally releasing their debut record, Blue Planet Eyes, this Friday, 26th September. The Sydney five-piece have been all the rage since their unabashed pop triumph This How You Feel? overran the airwaves last year.

Gearing up to take off for their tour of the States, guitarist and co-vocalist Gideon Bensen chewed the fat with Music Feeds about the “really good year” that has been 2014. With only a matter of hours before the big release of Blue Planet Eyes, Bensen revealed the anticipation feels a little strange.

“I don’t know. It’s kind of weird,” said Bensen. “I guess after we finished the album we handed it over to the label. It was kind of done and we were like, what do we do now? But it’s been really good in the sense that we’ve able to just enjoy it now. Take a step back and look at what we’ve achieved … We’re all in really good spirits.”

Up until this point it’s been a feel-good story for The Preatures, the plucky band that can’t seem to put a foot wrong. Positive reviews and kind feeback from industry folk and peers have left the band feeling content but did that prepare them for the rigours of recording a full-length album?

“We’d done quite of recording previous to that. So we went in with a pretty good idea of what the process would be like,” explained Bensen.

“We worked with with Jimmy [Eno] from Spoon, in Texas … He was just a really easy guy to work with. There was no ego in the room and he was able just to be there to, fundamentally, service our vision … He just got it.”

For many bands the making of a debut record is relatively pressure free. But for The Preatures, who have been in the ears and on the lips of music fans for quite sometime, big things are expected right out the gate. For Bensen and his band, the presence of external forces were felt but they didn’t distract The Preatures from their main focus. The music.

“You can’t help but acknowledge that there are people watching. And that people are going to be wondering what happens next,” admitted Bensen. “But we tried really hard not to let that get in the way. Izzi [vocalist Isabella Manfredi] had a really strong idea of what she wanted to do once the album started kicking in.”

“For us, as a band, it’s always been about songs. Right from the get-go it’s alway been about, ‘What does a song mean?'” You can listen to the full interview below.
