South Park has never shied away from poking fun at musicians. In the past they’ve targeted the likes of Kanye West and Russell Crowe (remember 30 Odd Foot Of Grunts?) with hilarious results. But their latest satire is sure to upset some fans, with show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone now taking on Lorde.
In the recent episode Gluten Free Ebola, Lorde makes an appearance performing at a kid’s party. The thing is, Lorde doesn’t quite appear to be herself. Her voice has dropped a few octaves, the dance moves seem a little stiff, and what’s with that moustache? If we didn’t know better, we’d say that’s Randy Marsh.
Also, which Pure Heroine track had the Kiwi pop queen warbling “Lorde, Lorde, Lorde, I am Lorde!” over and over again? Maybe it was her new single, Yellow Flicker Beat, which she unveiled earlier this week and is slated for an appearance on the Lorde-curated Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack.
No doubt many people will simply shrug off South Park‘s parody as a harmless goof and perhaps even see it as a nod of recognition towards Lorde’s current status in pop culture. However, unlike West and Crowe, Lorde has never forced party-goers to listen to her album three times in a row or chucked a telephone at hotel staff. Lorde’s reputation is that of a quality musician and intelligent young artist.
It will certainly be interesting to see how fans react to South Park‘s naturally iconoclastic take on Lorde, but let’s not forget that South Park‘s charm has long been its ability to respond to the times. Readers can check out Lorde’s “appearance” on South Park in the clip below.
