Foo Fighters Celebrate ‘Sonic Highways’ Debut With Secret Gig, ‘Letterman’ Top 10

The Foo Fighters have capped off a big week with one final performance on the Late Show With David Letterman and a secret gig at Chicago’s Cubby Bear, the venue where Foo’s frontman Dave Grohl saw his very first gig in 1983.

Finishing up their week-long residency on the Letterman, the Foos performed new single Something From Nothing and took part in a special Fooified Top Ten. We don’t want to give it all away but revelations from the Top Ten included a steamy love affair between Foo guitarist Pat Smear and show announcer Alan Kalter.

Moving from New York to Chicago, the Foos performed a secret gig at Cubby Bear that was streamed live immediately after the first episode of the band’s premiered HBO doco’s series Sonic Highways aired in the US.

Consequence Of Sound reports, the Foos enlisted the help of Naked Raygun’s frontman Jeff Pezzati, the very band Grohl saw play in ’83, to cover Raygun’s tune Surf Combat in what Grohl described as “the weirdest night of my life”.

Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen also joined the Foos onstage to cover his band’s tracks Surrender and Stiff Competition, in a set that featured plenty of Foo hits and deep cuts, and the first onstage live performance of Something From Nothing.

Then, of course, the inevitable curfew. According to CoS, as 1:00am rolled around, Grohl could be heard repeatedly shouting, “Fuck that clock.”

It’s been a bonza week for Grohl and co. who also dropped clues for a 2015 Australian tour and, somehow, also found the time to drop 10K at a strip club.
