Sleater-Kinney Reunite For First Album In A Decade

Influential American rock band Sleater-Kinney have announced their return from hiatus to release their eighth studio album, No Cities To Love, in January 2015. The influential three-piece, who became icons of the riot grrrl movement, released their most recent album, The Woods, in 2005.

Sleater-Kinney first ignited rumours of an imminent reunion by, well, reuniting. The band appeared on stage for the first time in almost a decade during a Pearl Jam concert in Portland. SK joined the Eddie Vedder-fronted grunge legends and R.E.M. members Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck to perform Neil Young’s Rockin’ in the Free World.

Guitarist Carrie Brownstein (also of Portlandia fame) fueled reunion rumours in January, telling Stereogum, “I would be curious [of reuniting]. I think we have more to say. I think we ended at a time when it wasn’t tapering off, actually. I would be curious to know what the rest of the story is with that band.”

Sleater-Kinney have now shared a lyric video for Bury Our Friends (below), the first track to be taken from No Cities To Love. The song, which features American film director Miranda July, is pure SK, through and through. Gristly but melodic guitar lines and expressive vocals are coupled with a bouncy rhythm.

In a press release (via Pitchfork), Brownstein has explained, “We sound possessed on these songs, willing it all – the entire weight of the band and what it means to us – back into existence.” No Cities To Love is produced by John Goodmanson, who has produced four Sleater-Kinney albums.

Bury Our Friends can be downloaded for free at the Sleater-Kinney website. The band will embark on a tour across Europe and the US in February and March 2015, so let’s hope they head down under soon enough.

No Cities To Love will be released internationally on 20th January 2015. Fans can pre-order the album in a variety of formats over at the Sleater-Kinney online store, and view the official album artwork below.

UPDATE 22/11/14: Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein has confirmed the band plan to make their way to Australia in 2015.
