Paul Kelly, Kev Carmody Deliver Stunning Tribute To Gough Whitlam

Beloved Australian troubadours Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody have delivered a touching and heartwarming tribute to the late Gough Whitlam at a memorial service in Sydney today, with a performance of their powerful Indigenous rights song From Little Things, Big Things Grow.

Introducing the song to the gathered crowd, Carmody said Whitlam was “a comrade and our king” and said he felt honoured and privileged to pay tribute to him. “I feel it’s a celebration. So if you want to sing along to this you will not be removed by security.”

The song was inspired by the struggle of Vincent Lingiari and the Gurindji strike, a memorable moment as part of the Indigenous Australian struggle for land rights and reconciliation.

In 1975 then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam famously poured soil into the hand of Lingiari to acknowledge ownership of the land by the Gurindji people and the struggle finally culminated in the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, one of Gough Whitlam’s most celebrated achievements.
