Iggy Azalea Responds To Q-Tip’s “Patronising” Hip Hop History Lesson

It’s been an interesting couple of week for Australian-born rapper Iggy Azalea, at least if you take her Twitter notifications into account. Earlier this week, Q-Tip stepped into the game to offer Iggy a lesson on the socio-political history of hip hop and now the Fancy rapper has responded to the “patronising” lecture.

“Most people learn every and anything they can about the subjects they are passionate about, I’m no different,” wrote Iggy Azalea on Twitter overnight. “I find it patronizing to assume i have no knowledge of something I’m influenced by, but I’ve also grown up with strangers assuming that, she added. “So its completely fine and I’m used to it by now. i don’t lose any sleep over it.”

While she doesn’t name names, it’s fair to assume Azalea’s tweets are in reference to A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip, who used the platform to deliver a lengthy lecture directed at the Mullumbimby-born rapper on the origins of hip hop, the concept of white privilege and its relationship with the genre.

His tweets came in light of rapper Azealia Banks‘ ongoing criticism of Iggy Azalea for appropriating black culture, while staying silent about civil rights issues, which even culminated in threats from hacker group Anonymous.

While she has her fair share of detractors, several hip hop figures have thrown their weight behind Iggy Azalea including T.I., Lupe Fiasco and will.i.am. Azalea thanked them for their support while saying she’s not going to be drawn into playing “hip hop squares with strangers” to prove she’s a fan of the genre.

“How you feel about me blending musical genres together doesn’t bother me, no one is making you support or buy pop rap albums,” she wrote. “It’s entirely up to you what you support and are interested in, thanks if you are interested in me and enjoy my music. i love to hear that!”

Not to be out-Twittered, Azalea Banks has too already fired back. “Qtip gave you some insight into the culture you’re influenced by and you really sat there and told him he’s hip-hop squares,” she wrote.
