Social Media Predicts Taylor Swift To Enter Triple J’s Hottest 100

UPDATE: Triple J’s Hottest 100 is underway! Keep up to date with live updates and milestones here.

Now that voting for triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2014 is officially closed, it’s time to start predicting. Luckily, thanks to Social Hottest 100, it looks like social media is once again being used to predict the final outcome.

Social Hottest 100 sprung up in the last couple of days, with only a Twitter account and email address to their name. They claim to have collated 20,000 votes – that’s 2000 voters, each with 10 votes – in order to formulate their Hottest 100. The results have been tweeted from the account, from 100 to 1.

After a punter suggested to the Social Hottest 100 via Twitter that Taylor Swift — whose fans are pushing for her song Shake It Off to win the Hottest 100, despite it never being played on triple j — would not be counted in the normal votes, the group responded by posting to Twitter, “While we agree, the votes for her have been factored in as if she were any other artist.”

Tay Tay’s hit single comes in at #76 on the Social Hottest, much lower than her fans were hoping for, though as Social Hottest 100 say their results are taken exclusively from social media, Swift’s placing may end up being much higher.

Last year, the Warmest 100 did a reasonable job of predicting the Hottest 100 of 2013, and Social Hottest 100 appears to have a larger sample size. According to its website, the Warmest 100 collated roughly 17,800 votes from 1779 entries last year, which was approximately 1.3% of the expected total vote.

The Warmest 100 2013 accurately predicted Vance Joy’s Riptide would reach the number one spot on triple j’s list. 85 Warmest 100 2013 predictions ended up on triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2013, but only four Warmest 100 entries exactly matched their Hottest 100 placings.

Canberra duo Peking Duk have been the bookies’ favourite to take the top spot this year, with their song High.

Social Hottest 100 say their data was taken only from social media, predominantly Twitter and Instagram posts with the #hottest100 hashtag. The account also tweeted that their results were entered manually into a spreadsheet.

UPDATE 20/01/15, 2:14pm: According to a former triple j presenter, Taylor Swift may now be disqualified from the Hottest 100 altogether.
