Loon Lake Are Back From The Brink Of Breakup With A New Single And Tour Dates

Melbourne indie rockers Loon Lake are going back to basics, with a new lineup in tow. After a succesful tour behind debut studio album Gloamer, the group are slowing down with new single Surfin’ and two intimate east coast shows.

With former guitarist and vocalist Daniel Bull leaving the band, drummer Nick Nolan has replaced him as lead guitarist, and band technician Rick taking the drum stool. The pesky throat problems experienced by Sam Nolan in the past have been set straight by surgery, but as the band admits in a statement released today, “Loon Lake almost decided to call it a day.”

Now that everything is well and good again, Surfin’ (below), which was premiered on triple j‘s Home & Hosed program last night, sees Loon Lake go full pelt into a sunny, hook-laden rock number, with a very Strokes-esque chorus. The group’s recent sessions have seen them record and produce everything themselves, with the help of their engineer.

“We had made a plan to return to how we used to do things, to just jam out to anything that seemed like fun,” says Nolan in a press release. “I remember just thinking about a character in my head, he doesn’t care and is kinda shit at stuff, but just thinks about Saturday night. So I based the lyrics [for Surfin’] around that character.

“We found the charm in our sound and I’m excited. For me, this song captures everything good about Loon Lake.”

Mirroring the stripped-back tones of Surfin’, Loon Lake have also announced two single launch shows at Melbourne’s Shebeen and Sydney’s Brighton Up Bar this March. Show and ticket details are available below.
