Foo Fighters are famed for drawing upon their many rock friendships to snag special surprise guests at their many gigs, and at ANZ Stadium last night Dave Grohl and co were joined onstage by Rage Against The Machine drummer Brad Wilk and together they covered the Van Halen classic Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love.
“One thing we love more than anything else is having our friends come up and jam with us,” said frontman Grohl, referring to Wilk as “one of our favourite people in the world” and “one of our favourite drummers”.
Wilk, who is playing Soundwave Festival as part of the Smashing Pumpkins touring lineup, joined the Foos for the glorious cover, taking over drumming duties while Taylor Hawkins gave his best David Lee Roth rendition. Maybe it was a Sammy Hagar impression. They both performed the song live, you know? Watch fan shot footage of the cover below.
The Foo Fighters’ 25-song strong Sydney set spanned the rockers’ decades long career, including tracks like The Pretender, Learn To Fly, Breakout and even more classic rock covers like AC/DC’s Let There Be Rock, Kiss’ Detroit Rock City and Queen & Bowie’s Under Pressure. Foo Fighters are ripping through Australia on their Sonic Highways international tour, and with Soundwave making its way through the country at the same time, there’s a wealth of stage ready guests primed for surprise appearances.
Punters who arrived earlier in the evening got another special surprise when supports Rise Against were joined on stage by Soundwave act Gerard Way and together they covered the Misfits classic Astro Zombies, putting their own spin on the horror-punk track. Watch clips from that performance here.
Foo Fighters continue their Australian Sonic Highways tour at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium on Saturday, 28th February, before moving on to Hobart, Adelaide and Perth for more shows that are sure to smash.
