Watch Sharon Van Etten Move A New Zealand Newsreader To Tears

Recently in the country for Golden Plains 2015 Brooklyn singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten has captured the hearts of many fans across the globe with her honest and heartfelt approach to music. It turns out one of her biggest fans is 51-year-old New Zealand newscaster John Campbell.

This week Etten made a tour stop in Auckland for a show Campbell couldn’t attend. As a long time, die-hard Etten fan he was understandably bummed about this, so his colleagues at 3 News arranged for Van Etten to play a set on-air – much to the newsreader’s visible surprise.

Van Etten played the track Tarifa from last year’s album Are We There, and her performance quite literally moved Campbell to tears. “I’m completely taken aback,” he said. “I had no idea this was happening…I love Sharon’s music a stupidly large amount and have for many years and I’m a bit overwhelmed by this.”

Campbell describes Etten’s music as “beautiful nursery rhymes” with “simple strum guitars and sad lyrics”. “Music just sometimes keeps you a float, doesn’t it?” he added.
