This Free Sydney Music Festival Suffered A Pretty Poor Turnout

Fairfax launched its foray in the events circuit this weekend with its new Spectrum Now festival, but things seem to have kicked off to a rocky start with a reportedly less than impressive public turnout.

Reports Mumbrella, the free Spectrum Playground event was held in Sydney’s Domain this past weekend – a venue which has a capacity to host up to 100,000 people – and very few people showed up.

The event was sponsored by ANZ, who admitted attendance “was smaller than expected”. They blamed recent bad weather for the lacklustre turnout.

A spokesperson for Fairfax told Mumbrella that Spectrum Playground drew a “good crowd and great feedback, although poor weather kept some people away as you would expect.” They added that “Spectrum Playground is just one of more than 200 events part of the inaugural Spectrum Now festival in March,” and that “momentum will build this week for the event”.

Mumbrella captured some footage of the event (below), showing a band taking to the stage in front of a mostly empty field. They estimated less than 300 people were at the festival when they attended on Sunday. However, Fairfax claims “9,000+ people” attended Spectrum Playground over the weekend, but didn’t break down how it reached those numbers.

The event’s musical lineup over the weekend included the likes of Lurch & Chief, Sampology, Ngaiire and Spookyland.

The free Spectrum Playground event continues throughout the week and into the weekend with acts like Left, Caitlin Park, Deep Sea Arcade, Cash Savage and more set to take the stage. Weather permitting, it will hopefully draw a bigger crowd.

The Spectrum Now festival began last Wednesday and runs until March 29th. See the festival website for the full program of events.
