Florence + The Machine Unveil New Single ‘Ship to Wreck’

Florence + The Machine have unveiled Ship to Wreck the fourth single to be taken from their highly anticipated album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful.

The guitar-driven upbeat number moves along to a buoyant beat punctuated, as always, by Florence Welch’s bombastic voice, yet lyrically it traverses some rather dark themes. “Did I drink too much? Am I losing touch? Did I build this ship to wreck?” she sings.

“I guess I was thinking about my own self destructive side, and how you can make something only to tear it down, enjoy/destroy, create/devastate etc,” said Welch about the song. “When you’re in that whirlwind, you often end up breaking the thing you love the most.” The video for the song is expected to be released next week.

Ship to Wreck follows previous How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful singles What Kind of Man, St. Jude and the title track. The album will serve as a follow-up to 2011’s Ceremonials and is expected to be released in Australia on Friday 29th May 2015.

Speaking previously about the album’s themes, Welch said her new record moves away from the idea of seeking “transcendence through death” to learning “how to love in the world rather than trying to escape from it.”

The album was produced by Markus Dravs (Björk, Arcade Fire) and also features collaborations with Paul Epworth, Kid Harpoon and John Hill. Listen to the new album cut below.
