Watch Amy Winehouse Sing Up-Close In First Official Documentary Clip

This year the life and career of Amy Winehouse will be the subject of a new, and somewhat controversial documentary, titled Amy, and now we’ve been provided with the film’s first official clip.

The clip shows Winehouse joking and singing with the camera up close, set against a voice-over of her manager Nick Schmansky speaking about her songwriting process. There’s also shot of Winehouse’s hand-written lyrics for her song Cherry, which featured on her 2003 debut album Frank.

“She said she’s not sure about writing songs, but she’s written a lot of poems,” says Schmansky. “She knew full well she’d been writing songs, but they were very personal songs.”

Directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Asif Kapadia, Amy has come under criticism from Winehouse’s family who have said the documentary is “misleading” and contains “basic untruths” about the late singer.

Amy is said to feature previously unheard Amy Winehouse recordings and archival footage, documenting the singer’s journey from childhood in North London, her rise to fame, and her tragic, untimely death from alcohol poisoning in 2011.

The film is set to premiere in Australia on Thursday, 2nd July this year, nearly four years after Winehouse’s death.
