Rage Against The Machine Members Play Doctor, Have Actual Surgery In New Video

Rage Against The Machine aren’t known to take themselves too seriously — well, not usually — and now the group’s bassist Tim Commerford and guitarist Tom Morello have starred in an entertaining-but-pretty-darn-gross music video for Commerford’s band Future User, which features footage of him getting spinal surgery.

Future User’s Voodoo Juju video (below) is a satirical take on the US healthcare system, and features Morello as the money-hungry Dr Van Drusel and Rush‘s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson as friendly Canadian doctors.

The video, co-directed by Ian Clampett and the members of Future User, cuts from Morello and Commerford’s impressively believable dialogue to actual footage of Commerford’s real-life back surgery, before Lee and Lifeson save the day.

Speaking with Blabbermouth about the clip, Commerford has said the idea came from his own misfortune. “I got the idea for the video after I ruptured a disc in my back and needed emergency surgery. As someone who often goes under the knife, I’ve always been a bit overwhelmed by the process, paperwork, approvals and costs,” Commerford said.

“Luckily, I have insurance, but it got me thinking about all the people in this country who can’t afford medical treatment. I read an article recently that said there are over 40 million uninsured people living in the States, which is insane.

“I talked my doctor into letting me shoot the surgery, then explained the concept to Tom [Morello], who was totally into the idea. And of course, you can’t talk about universal health care without bringing Canada into the conversation, so I called Geddy [Lee] and Alex [Lifeson] and asked if they’d be part of it and was blown away when they said yes. And all that footage of my back being opened up is real, no joke.”

Voodoo Juju features on Future User’s debut studio album, #SteroidsOrHeroin, which was released in February this year. Catch the song’s official video below, but be warned — Commerford isn’t joking about the legitimacy of that surgery footage.
