Miley Cyrus & Instagram Launch Transgender Pride Campaign

Pop rebel Miley Cyrus and photo-sharing service Instagram have launched a transgender pride campaign to help share the stories of transgender people.

Cyrus has announced the campaign on her personal Instagram account, saying that she will be introducing a selection of transgender people to her 22.3 million Instagram followers using the hashtag #InstaPride.

“I’m launching #InstaPride today, in partnership with Instagram, to share stories of transgender and gender expansive people from around the country,” Cyrus said.

“Over the next two weeks, you’ll meet them and the people in their lives who support them, as we highlight their stories of resilience.”

The first #InstaPride participant is 19-year-old Leo Sheng, who has been undergoing a female to male transition. Read about Sheng’s story in Cyrus’ photos, below.

Cyrus is no stranger to LGBTI activism, having already launched a series called Backyard Sessions with her charitable initiative The Happy Hippie Foundation, which helps raise awareness of LGBTI homeless youth.

The series has seen her perform with Laura Jane Grace from Against Me! and cover Crowded House with Ariana Grande while wearing animal onesies.

Locally, two men have been charged over the alleged bashing of transgender Australian musician Stephanie McCarthy, bassist for Sydney band Love Maul, who was reportedly bashed at Newtown’s Town Hall Hotel earlier this month. Following the incident, locals protested in the streets of Newtown against violence and transphobia.
