Kendrick Lamar Calls Out His FOX News Critics

Kendrick Lamar has responded to FOX News after the US television network took a swipe at the rapper after his performance of Alright at the BET Awards earlier this week.

FOX News criticised the performance, which featured Lamar on top of a vandalised police car, for “sending the wrong message,” with reporter Geraldo Rivera further saying that “hip hop has done more damage to young African Americans than racism in recent years.”

Now Lamar has responded, saying to TMZ Live, “How can you take a song that’s about hope and turn it into hatred?”

The track is centred around the main hook “We gon’ be alright,” and as such Lamar explained, “The overall message is ‘we’re gonna be alright.’ It’s not the message of ‘I wanna kill people.’”

“Hip-hop is not the problem,” he said. “Our reality is the problem of the situation. This is our music. This is us expressing ourselves. Rather [than] going out here and doing the murders myself, I want to express myself in a positive light the same way other artists are doing.”

Lamar described his BET appearance as “a performance piece”, centred around the “senseless acts of killing,” referring to the death of black youths like Michael Brown and Freddie Gray who were victims of police brutality.

Even with such a powerful message, the performance just failed to “interest” or “excite” FOX News, as Rivera’s co-host put it. Go figure. Watch Kendrick’s response to FOX News along with his explosive video for Alright, below.
