Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell says he “would always be open” to reuniting and making new music with American rock supergroup Audioslave, which he founded with former Rage Against The Machine members Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk.
Speaking to Total Guitar, Cornell says he is keen to work with his former bandmates again, adding that he isn’t sure what any new material would sound like given the fact Audioslave disbanded in 2007.
“I think it would be great,” Cornell says of the possibility of an Audioslave reunion.
“We did a lot of songs, and with the benefit of not having done anything with those guys for so long, I can’t imagine what it would be. It would be a really amazing experience just to get back and work with the same guys again.”
According to Cornell, Audioslave, who released their latest album Revelations in 2006, were sitting on extra material which they didn’t know what to do with when they split up.
“We were certainly a prolific group of people; we wrote three whole albums in around five years, maybe less,” Cornell says.
“And these were albums that were raw, and we had extra material, and we just never seemed to have trouble ever trying to agree on what would come out of the songs.
“They were great guys, and I really enjoyed the experience that I had with them, so yeah, I would always be open to doing something.”
Cornell’s comments come only weeks of Tom Morello said that he would be interested in working with Cornell again.
Morello told Radio.com that Cornell is “one of the most talented vocalists in the history of vocalists”, adding, “To be able to play the songs that we wrote together, it was awesome and so much fun. I hope we do something like that again.”
Cornell momentarily reunited with Morello in September 2014, performing a series of tracks — including Audioslave and Rage Against The Machine ones — together at a show in Seattle.
Cornell is set to hit Aussie shores this November for a solo acoustic tour behind his upcoming fourth solo album, Higher Truth. Until then, relive some classic Audioslave below, and dream of what might be coming.
