Music Feeds Faves – 7/08/15

Each week the Music Feeds team hunt down their favourite new tunes, bundle them up in some, often highly legible words and bring them to you. It’s Music Feeds Faves.

FKA twigs – Figure 8

Yussssss new TWIGS!!!!!!

So FKA twigs’ third EP, Melissa, is expected to drop in the coming weeks, and yet another kick-ass track from the release has made its way online. Twigs (real name Tahliah Barnett) has been playing Figure 8 at her shows for a while now, but the studio version is such a goddamn gem that it’s definitely been worth the wait to hear the track’s final iteration.

With twigs being an amazing dancer, Figure 8 was partly inspired by the figure eight hand motion used in vogue dancing. The song was premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show, where twigs also explained what the track means to her.

What does it mean to me? It means Melissa can’t come soon enough. / Tom Williams, Staff Writer

Oh Wonder – Drive

Offensively attractive British duo Oh Wonder are coming to our fair shores at the end of the year for Falls Fest and this is the latest beautiful, upbeat jam which I WILL play at my wedding (to Zac Efron in the spring of 2019).

Anthony and Josephine’s voices meld together like a gooey choc-mint swirl and ripple around the rising and falling strings and piano and, oh man, I can’t wait to be dipped by my husband Zac’s pythonesque biceps as his ocean blue eyes look deep into mine and we celebrate our eternal coupling. / Mitch Feltscheer, Creative Content Director

Jamie Woon – Sharpness

It’s been a while in between drinks for UK crooner Jamie Woon. He released his brilliant debut album Mirrorwriting way back in 2011 and since then has been pretty much silent apart from his collaboration with Disclosure January. Sharpness comes with the promise of a new album in the works which is exciting particularly when the first taste of it is so good.

Sharpness is an understated soul tune borrowing the gentle finesse of a Jessie Ware track and the old school soul of D’Angelo’s latest record. It’s the very definition of a slow-burner so don’t expect to be smacked in the face by it first listen. His voice is so effortless and just sits back in the beat. At a time when everybody is doing R&B/soul it’s refreshing to hear a voice that was actually made for it. I swoon for woon. / Sam Murphy, Staff Writer

RAC – Falling Hard

I am all about 8-bit Gameboy pop music at the mo (see last weeks Wave Racer entry in MFF) and this newy from Portugese producer RAC, featuring vocal from Madi Diaz, is pressing all the right buttons.

Opening almost like a straight cover of Kanye’s Paranoid, Falling Hard is elevated out of a by-the-numbers electro pop tune with Diaz’s varied, powerful vocals alternating between playful, almost talk-singing and some serious belt in the chorus. I’ve fallen. / Mitch Feltscheer

Glass Animals – Gold Lime

Look, full disclosure, I was going to swoon all over Jamie Woon’s comeback track this week but SOMEONE (looking at you Sam Murphy) beat me to it, so I’m filing all my Woon-related praise away for weekend bar talk.

In the meantime though, I’ll be here, behind my keyboard, getting D-O-W-N to Glass Animals’ cover/mashup/rework of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Gold Lion AND Erykah Badu’s The Healer. That’s two covers for the price of one.

They’ve called it Gold Lime. I don’t know why they’ve called it that, but I’m delighted it gives me somewhat of an opportunity to bring back this bad boy. / Nastassia Baroni, Editor

Hudson Mohawk – System

Huddy is at it again. Think an orgiastic tangle of robots beckoning you. Yes, you. Replace your heaving breath with the spinning whir of a turbine. Exchange your bodily fluids for motor oil. Swap your bone for metal.

That’s how the song talks to me.

In reality, System will be the anthem for the Super Bowl in 2100. The muscled male monsters we love will be a bygone fancy, and instead decked-out Jeeps and Pajeros driven by bionic mummies will tear the field asunder. / Luke Bodley, Presenter

JOY. – About Us

Brissie singer and producer on the rise JOY. has dropped another woozy slice of electronica tinged pop our way, again showcasing the blissful combination of her delicate, ethereal voice and naked, unadorned beats making for an atmospheric yet evocative track.

About Us floats towards you in a pastel-hued cloud and envelops you in a fine mist of ecstasy, sending your synapses aflame. Mmmmmm that’s the spot. / Mitch Feltscheer, Creative Content Director
