Sam Smith Announces New James Bond Theme ‘Writing’s On The Wall’

After teasing the news on social media, British singer Sam Smith has confirmed he has recorded the new theme song for the next James Bond film SPECTRE. The song, titled Writing’s On The Wall, will be released later this month.

Smith sent fans into a frenzy today after posting a photo (below) to social media of a hand wearing a SPECTRE-branded ring. Since then, he has confirmed all the speculation.

“This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song,” Smith says.

“I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Smith co-wrote Writing’s On The Wall with songwriter Jimmy Napes, and SPECTRE producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli say the pair’s effort “will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time”.

Other artist who were rumoured to be recording the newest Bond theme included Ellie Goulding, Radiohead and even Kanye West.

Writing’s On The Wall is the 24th James Bond theme song, and the first recorded by a British male solo artist since back in 1965 when Tom Jones performed the theme for Thunderball.

Writing’s On The Wall will be released into the wild on 25th September, before SPECTRE gets its Australian release on 6th November. Until then, catch the latest SPECTRE trailer, below.

Smith will tour Australia this November and December.
