Kids have access to all kinds of music these days, but their music taste is still so dependent on the grown-ups around them, so a new kid-friendly book called What Is Punk? has hit the shelves.
What Is Punk? was developed by author Eric Morse and illustrator Anny Yi, and doubles as a history lesson for any little punks in your life. As Morse says, it’s “a primer for little punks”.
With its clay illustrations and rhyming couplets, What Is Punk? introduces kids to the likes of The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Ramones and punk idols like Siouxsie Sioux. The book exposes the little ones to punk’s rebellious side in a G-rated way, while also making note of the sub-culture’s desire for equality and inclusiveness.
Soon enough, and with the help of What Is Punk?, the little ones in your life will get sick of your shit and become the disobedient teens they were destined to be.
What Is Punk? isn’t just about the early punk scene — it also delves into post-punk and protopunk acts like Iggy And The Stooges, Television, New York Dolls, Talking Heads, The Velvet Underground and Blondie.
Eric Morse, the author of What Is Punk?, is a former Warner Music Group executive, and says the idea for the book came about as a fluke.
Speaking to the Tory Daily blog, Morse says, “I misread the title to a book called This Is Pink, and once I realised my mistake, I remember saying to my wife, ‘They should make This Is Punk. I’d read that!’”
