Watch GWAR Annihilate A Cyndi Lauper, Ramones Mashup

You wouldn’t exactly pair Cyndi Lauper’s perky pop with GWAR‘s raucous, heavy metal stylings but the two have collided with the American band taking on Lauper’s She Bop.

The band, dressed in their usual science-fiction horror themed get-up, covered the Lauper track from 1993, clearing it of its quirky synths and replacing it with slamming guitars and growling vocals. They took the cover one step further by combining one bop with another and adding The Ramones’ Blitzkrieg Bop to the end of the track.

It all sounds very odd on paper but in reality it actually sounded very coherent and made complete sense – not that the band should be collaborating with Lauper anytime soon as they basically made the song unrecognisable.

The cover was done for AV Club‘s Undercover series which sees various artists come into the office and choose a song from a pre-made list of songs to cover. According to an interview following the performance, Gwar chose She Bop because, “it’s about masturbation and we’re about masturbation.”

This is the third time they’ve covered tracks for AV Club. In the past they have delivered renditions of Pet Shop Boys’ West End Girls and Kansas’ Carry On My Wayward Son.
