Mumford & Sons Will Play An All-Star Charity Soccer Match During Their Australian Tour

Mumford & Sons are set to kick social injustice right in the balls, announcing an all-star charity soccer match for this Friday, 14th November in the Sydney suburb of Redfern.

The reformed British folk peddlers will trade in their ~~waistcoats~~ leather jackets for skins, shinnies and football boots, and take the field for a round robin tournament at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.

Although sadly the likes of Lionel Messi and Eden Hazard won’t be in attendance (and don’t even get me started on Chelsea’s EPL season or I’ll cork you right in the shin) Team Mumford will be going head-to-head against the likes of fellow UK touring act The Vaccines, as well as the lads from reality TV action-drama Bondi Rescue, not to mention the Dungog Boomerangs, a team of youth leaders from the NCIE, as well as music industry teams from Dew Process, Sony, I Oh You, Purple Sneakers, Stoney Roads, UndrCtrl and more.

The first game kicks off at 6pm and entry is a pittance $5 donation, with all proceeds going to the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence and the community of Dungog.

And there’s also more to get excited about, with raffle prizes ranging from 4 x GA tickets to a Sydney FC game to a $300 prize pack of Rimmel London cosmetics.

Marcus Mumford announced the news (and waxed lyrical about The Beautiful Game) in a statement:

“The gift that keeps on giving. If there’s one thing that unites us and our crew and most of the British bands we get to go on tour with, it’s not music, it’s football,” he said.

“It’s the subject that anyone who’s never met can suddenly become intimate over, it’s the ultimate leveller, and it’s the greatest sport on earth. We love football. Football.”

The sweaty event comes smack bang in the middle of Mumford & Sons’ Wilder Mind Australian tour, so let’s hope the fellas don’t cop any injuries during play to put them in doubt for their big all-day Gentlemen Of the Road show at The Domain on Saturday with Jake Bugg, Future Islands, The Vaccines, The Jungle Giants, Meg Mac and more.
